INTRODUCTION

Covid-19 pandemic has altered the landscapes of socioeconomic, health and industries up to a point that we are accustomed living in a new norm. Many industries face difficulties in cost management, looking for new clients, going digital, and establishing life balance. With economic instability, many business owners may find alternatives in maintaining their revenues to avoid retrenchment which include freezing on new hiring, restricting overtime, reduction in hours, etc. However, there are cases of which employers have no choice but to wave the white flag. In this scenario, retrenchment should be exercised in compliance to legal requirements under Employment Act 1955 which emphasises that employers should take full responsible for it and its motive is to protect employees’ rights. Just like other ‘goodbyes’, there is no perfect way to face off with your employees and drop the news that their services are no longer needed in the company. However, as both government sector and private sector are more proactive in fighting for employees’ rights, they recognise the need to manage the retrenchment process by hiring consultants and career counsellors for them to prepare for changes in career. Government has taken the initiative to implement Employment Insurance System (EIS) to provide income replacement, job matching, upskilling, and reskilling for Insured Persons (IP) who have lost their jobs.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

My SHEQA is proud to present a conference which brings you insightful discourse on retrenchment. The key to a good result lies in developing and implementing a retrenchment procedure that achieves the desirable aims by employers in maintaining human capital as well as minimising the impact of job losses on workers. The conference will bring together government bodies and agencies, and non-government organisations to understand the challenges and ways to decently manage retrenchment. As we are aware this pandemic has led to many deployments through retrenchment, it is important for employers to deliver and handle the situation very gracefully. Hence, the conference will expose the best practices in delegating retrenchment as well as the initiatives on what employers can do to make sure employees’ rights are remained protected. The conference will also oversee the pattern of retrenchment in Malaysia, so companies are best prepared in upcoming economic challenges.
